Getting Ready for Golf
Are you ready to hit the links?
BY JENNY RILEY, Physical Therapist
Are you ready for golf season? We took Franklin Rehabilitation staff member and golf enthusiast Isaiah through a series of tests you can do at home to check if your flexibility, strength and stability may need some work before hitting the links this year. Click images below to enlarge them.
Low Back and Hip flexibility test. Start in your normal golf stance. Are you able to create a posterior pelvic tilt (round out your low back)?
Hamstring flexibility test. While standing, bend forward at your waist, keeping your knees straight. Are you able to touch your toes (or nearly touch them)?
Hip and Trunk stability and strength test. Start by lying on your back with your knees bent. Lift your hips up from the table. From this tilted position, are you able to kick one leg out and up in the air, keeping your hips level?
Trunk flexibility test. Sit upright in a chair with your arms crossed. Are you able to rotate your trunk at least 45 degrees (½ way around) in both directions?
Single leg balance test. In front of a mirror, stand on one leg. Are you able to steadily balance on one leg without leaning to the side?
Abdominal Strength test. Lie on your back (on the floor or another hard surface) with your legs straight up in the air. Are you able to lower your legs to at least a 45 degree angle while keeping your back flat against the floor?
It looks like Isaiah is in good shape to start his golf season! If you struggled a bit to complete these tasks, contact us for a free screening. We’ll take a look at your movements and get you straightened out before the courses open! (414) 425-9700 or [email protected]
