Many people don’t realize how common pelvic floor muscle dysfunction (Including the symptoms of urinary incontinence and pelvic pain) is for women. A recent study showed 19% of women 65-74 and as high as 40% in women 70 and older suffer from one or both of these symptoms. However, this can affect women of all ages.
Urinary incontinence usually comes on gradually. 75%-80% of sufferers live with the problem for at least 8 years before seeking treatment. Less than half of the patients who have urinary incontinence tell their doctor about the problem.
With early diagnosis this condition usually responds well to drug free, non-surgical treatment with exercises supervised by a specially trained physical therapist.
